Chinas Marssonde wartet auf die russische Mitfluggelegenheit

Als fünftes Land der Erde gelang es China im Jahr 1970, aus eigener Kraft einen Satelliten in die Umlaufbahn zu bringen. Im Jahr 2003 glückte die erste bemannte Weltraummission, vier Jahre später flog die erste chinesische Sonde zum Mond. Auch den Mars haben die Chinesen längst im Visier, doch der Start dorthin wird nicht vor 2011 erfolgen.

Ursprünglich hätte der Mikrosatellit Yinghuo-1 als Passagier auf der russischen Phobos-Grunt-Mission bereits im vergangenen Oktober zum roten Planeten starten sollen. Der Starttermin wurde jedoch kurzfristig auf das nächste Startfenster Ende 2011 verschoben (1), wenn Erde und Mars sich auf ihren unterschiedlichen Umlaufbahnen wieder nahe genug kommen. Die chinesische Sonde, die im Juni 2009 fristgerecht nach Russland geliefert worden war, ist mittlerweile wieder zurück nach China transportiert worden, wo sie auf ihre zweite Chance wartet.

In der Zeitschrift Chinese Astronomy and Astrophysics (2) sind jetzt zwei Artikel erschienen, die die wissenschaftlichen Ziele von Yinghuo-1 sowie die Ausstattung der Sonde ausführlich beschreiben. Im Mittelpunkt steht demnach die Erkundung der höheren Schichten der Marsatmosphäre und deren Wechselwirkungen mit dem Sonnenwind. Insbesondere, schreiben Wu Ji et. al. (3), soll die komplexe Struktur der Ionosphäre genauer als bisher erfasst werden. Das ist der Bereich in einer Höhe ab 120 Kilometer, wo der Sonnenwind die Moleküle der Atmosphäre von ihren Elektronen trennt und so ionisiert.

Zum ersten Mal soll die chinesische Sonde die Elektronendichte zur Mittagszeit und um Mitternacht messen. Bislang ist nicht bekannt, ob die Ionosphäre auf der sonnenabgewandten Nachtseite des Planeten überhaupt existiert. Der Mars hat kein der Erde vergleichbares globales Magnetfeld, das die geladenen Teilchen auf vorgegebene Bahnen lenkt. Struktur und Dynamik der Ionosphäre sind daher völlig anders als auf der Erde. Eine genauere Kenntnis der Zusammenhänge ist wichtig, um zukünftig Astronauten auf dem Mars vor gefährlicher Strahlung schützen zu können. Daneben erhoffen sich die Wissenschaftler von der Untersuchung der Marsatmosphäre auch Antworten auf die Frage, wie und in welchem Maße verschiedene Substanzen, insbesondere Wasser, ins All entweichen.

Yinghuo-1 soll den Mars auf einer stark elliptischen Umlaufbahn auf Höhe des Äquators umkreisen. Dabei wird sich die Sonde etwa alle drei Tage der Marsoberfläche bis auf etwa 400 Kilometer nähern. Der fernste Punkt der Umlaufbahn liegt 80.000 Kilometer entfernt. Für die Untersuchung der Atmosphäre ist erstmals die Kooperation zweier Satelliten vorgesehen: Yinghuo-1 peilt sein einstiges Mutterschiff Phobos-Grunt an und misst die Veränderungen von dessen Funksignalen beim Durchlaufen der Marsatmosphäre. Auch die Funkverbindung von Yinghuo-1 mit der Erde wird zur Untersuchung der Marsatmosphäre genutzt.

Die eigentliche Reise zum Mars erfolgt zwar unter russischer Regie, gleichwohl stellt Yinghuo-1 für Chinas Raumfahrt eine große Herausforderung dar, wie Chen Chang-ya et. al. (4) in ihrem Beitrag hervorheben. Die erste interplanetare Mission erfordert insbesondere die Gewährleistung einer sicheren Kommunikation mit der Sonde über Distanzen bis zu 356 Millionen Kilometer. Aber selbst bei gutem Empfang brauchen die Funksignale zu lange, um die Sonde komplett fernzusteuern. Sie muss daher in der Lage sein, ihre Antennen und Sensoren je nach Aufgabenstellung autonom auszurichten.

Eine weitere Schwierigkeit sind die unterschiedlichen thermischen Belastungen, denen die Sonde während ihrer Mission ausgesetzt ist. Am extremsten sind die knapp neun Stunden, die Yinghuo-1 während jeder Marsumkreisung im Schatten des Planeten verbringt. Während dieser Flugphase kann die Temperatur der Solarmodule bis auf -150 Grad Celsius sinken, die der Antenne sogar bis -180 Grad. Die verschiedenen Komponenten der Sonde sind daher getestet worden, indem sie 24 Stunden bei -269 Grad in flüssigen Stickstoff getaucht wurden. Wie Chen et. al. berichten, gab es dabei keine Funktionsprobleme. Auch die Solarmodule entfalteten sich problemlos nach 24 Stunden bei -180 Grad.

Nun hängt es in erster Linie von den Russen ab, ob die Mission Yinghuo-1 erfolgreich fliegen kann. Zwar ist Phobos-Grunt das derzeit wichtigste wissenschaftliche Raumfahrtprojekt in Russland. Ziel der ehrgeizigen Mission ist es, Bodenproben vom Marsmond Phobos zur Erde zu transportieren. Berichte über die bisherigen Vorbereitungen (5) deuten aber auf unklare Zuständigkeiten und mangelnde Unterstützung, die in der Verschiebung der Mission nur knapp zwei Monate vor dem Starttermin gipfelten. Die russische Politik ist sich offenbar noch nicht klar darüber, was sie mit dem Weltraum anfangen will. "Insgesamt können wir feststellen, dass sich die Rückkehr des Staates in der Rüstungsindustrie deutlicher abzeichnet als in der Raumfahrtindustrie", schrieb (6) Bertrand de Montluc kürzlich in der Zeitschrift Space Policy. "Im Hinblick auf den Weltraum können wir derzeit weder die Ziele der Regierung noch eine Strategie für die Industrie erkennen."

Aber Yinghuo wird fliegen, selbst wenn Phobos-Grunt nie abheben sollte. Vielleicht geht die Reise nicht gleich zum Mars, sondern erst einmal in den Erdorbit. Die für die Mission entwickelte Plattform sei "flexibel, einfach und leicht zu handhaben", schreiben Chen et. al.. Sie könne auch für Navigationssatelliten, Fernerkundung und andere Aufgaben verwendet werden.
