Auch im diesjährigen Loebner-Wettbewerb hat es kein Computer geschafft, menschliche Kommunikation zu imitieren

Reading - Die künstlich geschaffenen Androiden in Ridley Scotts berühmtem Sciencefiction-Film "Blade Runner" sind äußerlich nicht von Menschen zu unterscheiden. Nur im Gespräch, durch genaue Beobachtung ihrer Reaktionen verrät sich ihre wahre Natur. Als etwa einer dieser "Replikanten" nach seiner Mutter gefragt wird, erschießt er den Interviewer.

Solche drastischen Konsequenzen mussten die Freiwilligen, die gestern an der britischen University of Reading beim Wettbewerb um den Loebner Prize als Juroren agieren, nicht befürchten. Im Kern geht es aber um dieselben Fragen: Ist mein Gesprächspartner ein Computer oder ein Mensch? Kann Software einen Menschen perfekt imitieren? Auch beim gestrigen Loebner-Wettbewerb ist das nicht gelungen, doch die Software "Elbot" lag schon sehr nahe daran, sagen die Wettbewerbsveranstalter. Entwickler von "Elbot" ist der amerikanische Softwareingenieur und Psychologe Fred Roberts, der bei der deutschen Softwarefirma Artificial Solutions arbeitet.

Ausgedacht hat sich die Versuchskonstellation beim Loebner Prize der britische Mathematiker Alan Turing. Im Jahr 1950 publizierte er den legendären Aufsatz "Computing Machinery and Intelligence". Darin postulierte er, dass eine Maschine, die im Gespräch nicht von einem Menschen zu unterscheiden ist, als intelligent angesehen werden müsse.

Natürlich dachte Turing nicht an ein direktes Gespräch wie in "Blade Runner". Er stellte sich vor, dass ein Mensch über Fernschreiber mit einem anderen Menschen und einem Computer kommuniziert. Nach fünf Minuten soll er dann entscheiden, welcher der Gesprächspartner der Mensch und welcher der Computer ist. Erleichternd legte Turing fest: Es reiche, wenn mindestens 30 Prozent der menschlichen Gesprächspartner die Maschine für einen Menschen hielten. "Elbot" schaffte immerhin 25 Prozent.

Im Jahr 1990 versprach der US-Unternehmer Hugh Loebner dem Programmierer, dem es zuerst gelingt, den "Turing-Test" zu bestehen, eine Prämie von 100 000 US-Dollar. Solange dieses Ziel nicht erreicht ist, gibt es bei dem alljährlich ausgeschriebenen Loebner Prize 3000 US-Dollar für das Programm, das einem menschlichen Gesprächspartner am nächsten kommt - 2008 also "Elbot". Loebners Initiative wurde von der Forschergemeinde zunächst freudig begrüßt. Doch der erste Wettbewerb um den Loebner Prize, 1991 im Boston Computer Museum als große Galaveranstaltung aufgezogen, endete als Desaster. Sieger wurde eine einfache Variation von "Eliza", einem aus etwa 200 Zeilen bestehenden Programm, mit dem Joseph Weizenbaum bereits im Jahr 1966 auf verblüffende Weise einen menschlichen Gesprächspartner imitiert hatte. In den 25 Jahren danach, so das Resümee des Wettbewerbs, hatte es offenbar keinen nennenswerten Fortschritt gegeben. Die führenden Computerforscher der USA waren bloßgestellt.

Eine Reaktion darauf war es, die Bedeutung des Turing-Tests herunterzuspielen, der nunmehr nicht mehr als Kriterium wirklicher Intelligenz, sondern als bloße Vortäuschung von Intelligenz angesehen wurde. Kevin Warwick, Professor für Systems Engineering an der University of Reading und Organisator des diesjährigen Loebner Prize, kann dem nur teilweise folgen. "Sicherlich ist der Turing-Test nicht mehr der entscheidende Meilenstein bei der Entwicklung künstlicher Intelligenz", räumt er ein. "Er bleibt aber ein wichtiger Meilenstein, der bis heute nicht erreicht worden ist."

Warwick sah in der Vorbereitung des gestrigen Wettbewerbs eine realistische Chance, dass sich das ändern könnte. Gekommen waren mehrere hundert Besucher, die als Juroren die Computerprogramme testeten. Sowohl erfahrene Computernutzer als auch digitale Neulinge, englische Muttersprachler und Ausländer waren zur Teilnahme aufgerufen. "Wir wollen die Latte hoch legen und die Maschinen wirklich fordern", sagt Warwick.

Auch wenn der Turing-Test noch nicht erfolgreich absolviert wurde: Das Testszenario bietet auf jeden Fall Einblicke in die menschliche Kommunikation und fügt sich damit in ein Forschungsgebiet an Warwicks Institut. Dort werden Spiele zwischen Menschen und Computern systematisch untersucht, um das Wesen der Intelligenz besser zu verstehen. "Jedes Spiel, sei es Schach, Poker oder Pacman, ist eine Projektion des wirklichen Lebens, bei der jeweils ein spezieller Filter zum Einsatz kommt", sagt Warwick. Die Konstellation beim Turing-Test etwa ähnle dem Plot im Musical "My Fair Lady", in dem die Blumenverkäuferin Eliza lernt, durch eine gewählte Ausdrucksweise eine bessere soziale Herkunft vorzutäuschen.

Ähnlich wie bereits 1997 beim Schach werden Computer in den kommenden Jahren auch bei anderen Spielen wie Go oder Poker die menschlichen Weltmeister schlagen, davon ist Warwick überzeugt. Bedenklich wird es für ihn, wenn Computer auch bei komplexeren Strategiespielen zu ernsthaften Konkurrenten des Menschen werden. "Wenn politisches und militärisches Denken von Computern übernommen wird, mache ich mir Sorgen", sagt er.

Das klingt dann doch wieder ein wenig wie "Blade Runner".
